coin grading

2 posts in this topic

I am new to site and to coin grading.  Just been reading and looking.  How can anyone say (ex) an EF40 coin which has been in circulation has been cleaned?  As being new to coins say it was cleaned when new (ex) 1881 and cleaned then, put in circulation for 40 years, worn down to an EF40 grade, how could you tell.  Had been in pockets, cash registers, and handled a lot.  Just wanted to know.

Thank you for your question. I have copied the link to our details grading brochure. When a coin is improperly or harshly cleaned there is irreparable damage to the surface which is destructive to a coins aesthetic appeal.
