1963-P MS 66 FBL price reduction

If several sell at auction for a lower price. If a lot more get authenticated at that grade making it more

common. I am guessing your are looking at the NGC coin price guide. You would be better off looking at

auctions results for prices.

I'm not sure which price guide you are looking at, but the NGC price guide shows the price steady or increasing. The pop report shows a single 66FBL coin graded by NGC, although I think there are a couple more at PCGS. This coin hasn't sold in the past couple of years that I know of.

The price of these ultra-rare top coins is determined largely by Registry players, and on the strength of the coin. Sure, the NGC price guide says $37,000 for this coin (although I think a more realistic number is $30,000). But, the population is extremely small, and it isn't traded often - so the price guide is essentially useless here.

For a little bit of eye candy, here is the second highest graded 1963-P Franklin, graded NGC MS-65+ * FBL. I own it (and I really do think it deserves 66FBL):

Hi and thanks for the response.

The price reduction, down to $15000 was at the PCGS price guide. NGC still shows $37000.

I too own one of the 1963-p MS66 FBL coins.  I was shocked to see the price reduction.

Thanks again.

Congrats on owning one of these! I'm not sure which specimen you own, but the last sale I see on Heritage was in 2015 for $17.6k: https://coins.ha.com/itm/franklin-half-dollars/1963-50c-ms66-full-bell-lines-pcgs/a/1225-3357.s?type=NGC1225

I don't follow the PCGS price guide, but $15k seems a bit low (I don't know what it was before). I think the 2015 sale was hurt by a coin that had somewhat dark toning and probably more accurately grades 65+ (just interpreting the Heritage photos - it might be completely different in hand). An accurately graded 66FBL would sell for more (such as the much cleaner coin sold in 2013 on Heritage for $27k). The truth is probably somewhere in between.
