New take on the Hobo Nickel?

Not sure how well received this type of thing is perceived in the coin collector's market but I will post it anyway.

 

This artist attempts to decorate the coin while still preserving its original image. There are some exceptions but the scroll work is quite beautiful. His name is Shaun Hughes.

 

He even has some up for auction on ebay which are getting some big bids. Here's the article I ran across. It has all the links as well if you care to look.

This was popular in the Victorian era when coins were widely used to make inexpensive jewelry.

The artistry and work is quite stunning.

 

I'd rather see this kind of art than the copying of US designs struck in so-called "fantasy" dates.

The work of some of these coin carvers is very good, but I do wish they wouldn't refer to them as "hobo nickels".
