1986 Halley’s Comet Commemorative Medal, 50mm Diameter, Struck on a 1 Ounce melted Meteorite NGC MS63 @ $1.395.00 Shipped.

This is the only example I have ever seen third party certified which is housed in an older oversized NGC holder. With the exception of this example, all others I’ve seen today having been handled raw show brown rust oxidation.Designed by Kim Poor of Nova graphics a nationally recognized astronomy artist who created the original artwork for this medallion. The meteorite used came from the world's most famous meteorite hunter Robert A. Haag's very own collection of meteorites. The Canyon Diablo meteorite used came from the crater area forty miles east of Flagstaff,Arizona. About 30,000-50,000 years ago a giant meteor hit the dry Arizona desert at an incredible speed of 30,000 miles per hour. The resulting blast created an impact crater 4,000' across and 700' deep. Most of the meteor was vaporized, but some fragments survived of which this medal was struck on. This project began in 1985 in hopes of producing the medals to be offered for distribution prior to the arrival of the Comet. Produced by Robert A. Haag an entrepreneur whose company Bearded Star was located in Tucson. Haag bit off more than he could chew as when it came to actually minting medals. As the unearthly metal took over 3,400-4,000 degrees heat to melt which was 3 times more than earthly iron. It also proved very difficult to pour the molten metal as it would sputter and instantly solidify once it hit a cool surface. The problem was overcome by spinning and heating and the ceramic forms. By the time meteorite was melted into planchets suitable for medals the comet had come and gone. So due to extreme melting and very laborious circumstances few medals where ever made.
