Question about a low serial numbered coin in a recent holder

2 posts in this topic

Across the street there is a thread about a crackout and upgrade of an 1887-O morgan dollar. The coin is currently in an NGC holder with the serial number 560427-001. This is a rather low invoice number which would seem to have most likely have been printed a long time ago. But the front label style on the holder has only been in use since August of 2003. This same coin was in a B&M Kingswood auction in June of 2004 but at that time it was in a PCGS MS-65 holder. Can you explain how this coin got into a very recent NGC holder with a very old invoice number? There is some speculation that it might have been put into an old NGC holder that had been carefully opened with it's old label, sealed, sent back for reholdering, and the resealed slab was not noticed.

Has this serial number ever been sent back in for reholdering or was its first use sometime after June of 2004?

Invoice numbers (serial numbers) are not indicative of when a label was printed because NGC does not always print blocks of invoices in consectuive order. When NGC started printing invoices many years ago, we jumped around in terms of our use of numbers. In recent years, we have identified the blocks of numbers that weren't used and we have been using those numbers as well as using numbers in order going forward.
