What determines the sequence of auction lots?

2 posts in this topic

Most auctions with multiple sessions seem to follow a predictable order - by ascending denomination by date. Session 1 starts with colonials, and the last session wraps up with double eagles, then the odds and ends (e.g., patterns, errors, etc.). But occasionally I'll see one where session 1 has colonials through double eagles, etc., and the next session starts over again with colonials and goes through all the series again.

Doesn't it seem odd to do that? What would be the reasoning behind it?

I think that when they separate auction lots that separate days and they start over, they are auctioning a different collection, owned by another person in the second session. Often they will combine a couple of collections together in one auction.
