Looks like a genuine 14/13 to me - Overton 101a, since the sharp die breaks are visible (1) under the date and (2) under the right reverse motto. The issue fits the description of the original coin in other ways as well. Nice find.

The coin looks AU50 to me, possibly 53, but one cannot really say from a scan.

It appears to be genuine from the photo. The dies are cracked and clashed, a very common state for Capped Bust Halves of the 1810-14 period.

Yea, the dies are clashed. What you see around the date is the scroll for the "E Pluribus Unium." On the reverse you have got her bust line at 2 o'clock.

Nice coin. I like it.

I don't know nothing about bust coinage, but that is some excellent photography! Please feel free to share more!

Here is a dumb question. How do you tell that the overdate is a 13 over 14 and not a 14 over a 15??? I think there aren't any 1815 Halfs that aren't overdates? I might have my info backwards! tongue.gif

In the 4/3, the lower loop of the 3 is visible. In the above pic, it's tough to see.

There is no 1814 over 1815 overdate. All 1815's are 1815/2.

That is definitely an 1814/3, O-101a. If the coin has nice luster, it should grade AU50-53. The weakness on the eagle's wing is due to striking. All of the actual wear is suggestive of an AU grade. The amount and quality of luster will determine whether is is a 50 or a 53, but this cannot be determined from the scans.

1815/2 !? I thought the 1815 halfs were overdates, I just didn't know what the overdate was. Thanks for the info...
