Help Please-1899O Barber Dime Open O

2 posts in this topic

I have a 1899O Barber Dime that has a U instead of O in the OFAmerica at the top on the Oberse, also there seem to be small ears of corn in the wheat on the reverse. This is the only one I have seen like this.I would be grateful for any information on this coin. Thanks, Snake

The features you describe may have resulated from overpolishing of the dies. This causes features to become shallow, incomplete or dimished in width. Such polishing is performed when the dies clash or become rusted, and the remnants of those conditions need to be abrasively removed from the dies.
