1776 Continental Currency Dollar - is this worth anything?

9 posts in this topic

New to the forum. Looking for some general information regarding a coin that we had in our collection. Is this worth anything? Please look at the images. I know your comments aren't a "real" quote, but I would like to know if getting an appraisal is worth my time.

Those pictures are pretty good especially for a first time poster. Welcome to the boards btw.

In fact those are nice enough to tell that this coin is a cast fake. If you look at the surfaces and all the pits and roughness, that tells you right away it's a cast fake. If you look at this coin under a semi powerful magnifying glass, say 16x, you will be able to see metal splatter.

So, all in all what you have is cool but not worth anything.

Unfortunately it is a cast copy without the word "COPY" on it. I bought one like it back in the 1980s at Woolworth's in downtown Boston. I went through the bin where they had a few hundred of them and found one without the word "COPY" on it.

Don't feel badly. Most all of the "Continental Dollars" that crop up these days are copies. Many, many copies of this coin have been made through the years.

And yes, that is a very nice pair of photos. (thumbs u

Thanks so much everyone for your thorough advice. I thought it was too good to be true. I'll still go through my collection though and pass them by you guys if I find anything interesting. Thanks for your patience and time with a newbie.
