Peculiar rim damage on a Morgan 1895-O

10 posts in this topic

This 1895-O Morgan is certainly not pretty but what piques my interest is just what kind of rim damage it has. If you view it under magnification most of the marks do not appear to be typical random damage. Some are random looking but perhaps the larger angular ones be from metal chips in the minting process?

The face-on views were made on a flatbed scanner. The side views were taken with a PS camera and software adjusted for color, brightness and contrast to bring out detail in the marks. What would TPG take on the marks be and is the coin it even gradable?

It would not straight grade. Minor rim hits that don't look like ex-jewelry, will not prevent a numerical grade, usually. Case by case basis as there is no hard and fixed rule.

dharper, first off welcome to the forum.

A word of caution, although it nice to have images linked where they can be expanded to view detail, you also opened up your entire flicker account. Anyone can grab personal images from there and do as they please.

The Morgan dollar is beat up pretty bad along the rims, not associated with the minting process.

Good luck.

Here is a coin I was a little surprised did not grade straight at ICG:

Was a little surprised they were so harsh on that. Plus I had a Bust half they graded AU55 that NGC graded AU58 PL, it makes you wonder.

who knows what one is thinking at times

I doubt that NGC or PCGS would have been so harsh.

This cheap ICG slab is likely going into NGC on an economy submission.

Dealer called it XF, ICG VF20, coin has luster and better detail than that.
