Guess the grade and variety

9 posts in this topic

This is the third time I submitted a coin here and the third time this happened. Twice when I was a member and now the 1st submission AFTER cancelling my membership. I am waiting for responses to the initial question and then I will show you the results!

It is hard to tell luster from your photos. I would guess the coin is a 1878 7/8 strong with a grade a between AU 58 to MS62. If I had to assign a single grade, I would go with AU-58 because of the scratches and there appears to be some circulation rub.

That gash on the reverse near the eagles head might have put this in a details holder. Other than that it looks Ms 62 – 63.

Looks funky to me, I'd say it's a details coin, altered surfaces, or improper cleaning maybe. The luster looKs broken in certain areas in the fields. I'd go with guessing that coin has been messed with somehow So AU details It is cool though, I love the tail feathers.

I must say, there were some very good answers! In all hinesty, I submitted 24 coins. One was a refield and they would not grade it,Why? Because they did not have a label! Sad isnt it. The rest of my coins were very original, I had 2 dealer friends look at every coin before I submitted them.

The last time I submitted when I was a member I submitted a Carson City With a variety It was a vam 2a? I think...it was awhile ago and they never marked mt holder with any vam but were happy to keep the attirbution fee I sent. I will take a picture in a few minutes and show you the results of this question I asked today.( By the way I JUST got these back today from grading)

As you can see I had to write the correct attribution myself and for me to do it was free!

This was my last time WASTING hard earned money on coins that were sent out original and came back washed out. I do not know what they put in their holders but everyone who originally saw my coins before submission and after they came back could not believe how terribly different they all looked. I guess my main point is,to not mark a proper attribution once I call a mistake but to have it happen three times in a row is called not caring about the services you give to customers.

I have determined even though I am a collector I am far better off to not get my coins graded because frankly when I get a coin back, break it out and resubmit it and get 5 different grades every time I resubmit the same coin it proves one thing. Grading IS ones opinion! Overall, when it comes down to selling the coin, I make more off the coin selling it raw due to such inconsistancy in grades. I will not submit another coin unless the coin is a coin I paid 500 or more for and it means if I submit the coin getting at least 4 times what I paid for the coin by submitting it.(That is IF when I submit it the grade comes back what I expect it to which lately is very seldom.

For the one who thought the coin should have been bagged,The one mark you see is a bag mark and not anything else.

I would recommend that you contact NGC as it appears that the label is not correct. I would hope that they would correct the mistake at their cost.

A while back I had submitter 3 raw coins to NGC at the same time a 1878 7/8tf strong, 1878 7tf, and 1878 8tf and they got all three labels on the coins correct.

I agree. If NGC got it wrong just call the office and they'll have you send it back to be corrected at no charge.

I have to say, sending anything in over and over is just about the worst bet in the casino. Unless the value jumps up considerably one grade to the next it's a risk too costly to take repeatedly. In cases where you think the graders got it wrong CAC is the way to go. For collectors, if they don't put a bean on the coin, you get your money back. If they do, then the bean carries weight and valuation. You can even crack out a beaned coin then resubmit with the confidence that you're argument is pretty valid.
