Full Step War Nickels

I have been working on assembling a FS War Nickel Registry set. I have set a personal goal that all coins in the set will have at least (5) full steps. An observation is that the registry points given for examples of FS war nickels are low, considering how few FS examples of these date and MM populations exist. It seems that many high ranking war nickel registry sets contain highly graded, non-FS coins. IMHO, this is an issue with this set, because if you limit the set to FS coins, you will most certainly be limited in graded coin acquisition opportunities and registry set ranking.

I would like to hear the opinions of some other board members on this subject. What are your feelings regarding grading ratios of FS to non-FS coins in this set.

Hi Charlie - I think that the only truly difficult coins to acquire in the Wartime Jefferson set are those that grade MS67 6FS, with the exception of the 1945-S, which is difficult in that grade alone. I don't think that the regisrty scores are out of whack with regard to the relative value of the coins or their difficulty of acquisition, except for the 1945-S, which I think is more difficult to acquire in MS67 5 or 6FS than either the 42-P or 45-P. I don't think that pops relfect this well, but I also think that pops are inaccurate as all get-out.

Anyhow, I think that if any scores should be adjusted, it's those I mention and a couple of MS67 (non-FS) that should probably moved up in score.

Just MO, Mark.

Charlie,

First off, getting reg quality war Jeffs with 5FS shouldn't be a problem, money aside. I also am in the process of such a quest and have managed to get quite a few in MS66 with 5FS or 6FS and even two MS67's, one a 5FS one a 6FS. I've even passed on several MS67FS because I didn't think the strike was strong enough to warrant the grade. The only one I'm missing is the 45-P and I've passed on 3 in 66/5FS within the last month, same reason as above. Here are recent prices for MS66FS or MS67FS (low to high) I have recorded from various sources.

1942-P (NGC-67) $85! (PCGS-67) $747.

1942-S in MS66FS $300 to $546. (slab not recorded)

1943-P (NGC-67) $80! (PCGS-67) $550.

1943-D NGC-67) $45! (PCGS-67) $718!! Should run $200.-$250.

1943-S in MS67FS $320 to $750. (slab not recorded)

1944-P (NGC-66) $90. (PCGS-66) $250. to $300.

1944-D (NGC-67) $60. to $150. (PCGS-67) $160 to $250.

1944-S in MS67FS will run over $1000. and up to $1500.

1945-P in MS66FS $250. to $650. (most in PCGS)

1945-D (NGC-67) $255. (PCGS-67) $575. Should average $350. to $450. The lone NGC MS68FS went for $3300. Somebody sniped me from the floor/phone on this one last month!

1945-S in MS66FS $350. to $750. I got mine for $550.

All the ones I have are either 66/5FS, 66/6FS, 67/5FS or 67/6FS. The toughies are as expected, commensurate with availability and the prices reflect this. A good source of basic info is the pop reports from both services. I put more strength in NGC over PCGS listings tho but still a place to start.

Hope I've been of help and am sure Hoot or Leo could add their thoughts as well!

OOPS! See Hoot posted while I was typing! Thanks Hoot! As stated, some years aren't in 67FS from NGC and the ones you find in PCGS, make sure the strike is right for the grade! (True for BOTH services).

Great price comparisons, David.

1944-S in MS67FS will run over $1000. and up to $1500.

1945-P in MS66FS $250. to $650. (most in PCGS)

1945-D (NGC-67) $255. (PCGS-67) $575. Should average $350. to $450. The lone NGC MS68FS went for $2300. Somebody sniped me from the floor/phone on this one last month!

1945-S in MS66FS $350. to $750. I got mine for $550.

The prices on 44-S pieces are completely out of whack. Only a 67 6FS would deserve such attention, and a well-struck piece, to boot. Maybe I'm wrong, but I still think that when comparing strike and other features tick-for-tack, the 45-S is the most difficult piece. What do you think?

Hi Ya Would a MS65 6FS 44-P rate higher tan a MS66 5FS?

I agree with you Mark but this is the spread I've recorded. Nevadamans 67FS reg set coin sold for $1495 with Bowers/Merena as did another 67 go for $1200. The cheapest 67FS I've got listed is a PCGS MS67FS that sold on eBay for $957. I'm happy with my 66/5FS.

Would a MS65 6FS 44-P rate higher tan a MS66 5FS?

Not with me, especially since the date/mm you picked shows NGC has made 15 in MS66/6FS!!! (I've got a 66/5FS til a 6FS shows).

Thank you for all the information David, Hoot and even Leo. Hoot: I notice that you posted the final coin (a 1943-S) in your War Nickel Registry set today. Congratulations!

It is difficult from the pop. reports to make sense of the market on these coins. You guys have been collecting them much longer and I appreciate the information, particularly on pricing. Pricing seems to be a fairly wide-spread on many of these coins which makes a fair price expectation more difficult to figure.

You guys sure love to pic-nits! I'd just go for a plain strike with pretty toning. But that's just me... screwy.gif

Hey, just 'cause you work for Color Pro doesn't mean the rest of us can't pick nits. (Besides, they're tasty.) insane.gif

Those PCGS prices almost sickens me. Just goes to show, once again, that people are collecting the slab and not the coin. Sure am glad I don't collect by grade and steps. heh wink.gif

Charlie, David or HootI have several wartime nickels in MS65 FS and higher including raw coins. NGC should do well with most of these dates. If you would like to play around with them with NGC that's up to you. What kind of return policy would you like? I can send very detailed pics of coins and steps. I have a new camera set-up that does amazing pics. Here is my ANACS MS67 6 step 1942-D with my new camera set-up!

Leo asked me if he could post this picture of this ANACS, MS67, 1945-P, 5-step. I recently purchased this coin from Leo and received this it in the mail yesterday. The coin looks even better(!) than the scan. Thanks, Leo.
