That's the thing that has always bothered me... if you are going to break the law and risk imprisonment, why on earth would you do such a shoddy job? (That assumes it is a domestic job and not from Asia).

He mentions that is is dark red in color. Possibly a copper alloy? I suspect this may have been a contemporary counterfeit that was originally a brassy yellow color or which has lost it's plating. Such contemporary counterfeits were often crude like this.

Hmmmm.....Looking at some of the other coins that seller has for sale....You would expect that seller would be able to tell the difference?
