Those who have been to Plymouth, MA, Plymouth Plantation and the various historical exhibits around there get a sense of the frugality and struggle for survival these people endured. There was as much seafood on the festival as wild game. One thing's for sure they were not consuming 4500 calories in a meal or two. It is enlightening to read William Bradford's journals and other first person accounts of that first generation of settlers.
