1795 $1

[Nutmeg Coin]

Someone on Craigslist contacted me as to ascertaining value on a 1795 dollar small eagle he apparently has. I told him to post on this or another forum. Anyone have thoughts on value? Real/fake?

Here are pictures of the coin. I think it would help to see the edge of the coin to see the lettering. I will leave the grade / authenticity thoughts to people with experience in this series.

It looks like a modern Chinese fake to me. The Chinese have made a "hub" of the off-cent bust variety, which I have seen with the 1796 date on it. That variety was only made as one of the two 1795 varieties.

 

The bottom line is, this one is worthless. It is probably not even made of silver.
