$3 Gold 1856 S

I am considering sending this coin to NGC to be graded. My concern is it appears to have been cleaned in the past. Can it still be graded if it was cleaned? I would appreciate your opinion on the grade. I hope sharing the dropbox link is appropriate way to view pictures.

I don't think it would numerically grade but would authenticate. The reason, the obverse for sure has been harshly cleaned. Those hairlines etched into the metal.

Unfortunately that coin will not grade because of the heavy hairlines from cleaning on the obverse. The photos are a bit too small, the pictures that were shown in the second post were large enough to use.

It is such a shame, and actually heartbreaking, whenever I see a coin that has been abused to that degree.

Looks like it would have graded very respectfully if not for the damage.

Welcome to the forum.

I need to do some research. It belongs to my father-in-law. I am new to coin collecting and had considered buying it from him to get started collecting. Other than being cleaned (understand that is bad) it's in very good condition. I hate to tell him its significantly devalued.
