1958 Lincolns and Toning.... ???

7 posts in this topic

Why is difficult to find toned examples of this particular year for either Mint mark ? You can find toned examples of almost every year prior to 1958 that the Mint used the cardboard holders.

Did something change in the metallic content of the cent ?

The Mint was still using its cardboard Mint Set holders with paper envelopes - so that didnt change. You can find the other coins in those sets toned but its really hard to find a nicely toned cent from 1958.

Anyone else notice this ?

Here is a small sampling of the 1958's I have pulled out of double mint sets....I wouldn't consider any of them spectacular especially considering the quality of the 1957 Lincoln Toners I have pulled out of these sets....but it's a sampling none the less....

I probably should have been more clear.... attractive toning. But I am glad you posted those coins Shane because they do illustrate what I was trying to say...

Except for 1 coin, none of the toning on the other coins is really that attractive or should I say as attractive as the pre-1958 Mint Set coins. The last set of Lincolns are by far two of the most attractively toned 58s I have seen.

Usually they come more like the coins in the smaller photos. Blotchy, not colorful and uneven.

Winged - that is a rare coin. That is by far the nicest toned 58 I have ever seen and Ive been looking for years.

Lee - also attractive and that is about the nicest you can find - on occasion. Even with that color its not easy to find.

Thats why I am wondering why the difference between the 57s and 58s. Matter of fact even the earlier years can be found nicely toned. Im at a lost why the 58s dont tone.
