If you are still here, no one ever responded to your post so I will.

 

I am a collector of South Africa but currently only Union and not ZAR. I am familiar with the veldpond since I know this series and its probably the most prominent South African coin or maybe second after the unique 1898 "Single 9".

 

As for its scarcity, it is certainly scarcer than most but I only consider it moderately scarce. I suspect that the actual number available is probably between 50% and 100% more than the combined census (maybe as many as 300) including problem coins. But as with other coins with this survival rate with a high price tag, it isn't hard to buy at all.
