Four-Coin 1836 O-106 Bust half dollar Grading Set

4 posts in this topic

I think some of these grades will be surprising, given the results of the previous thread comparing the XF and AU coins. This four-coin run is a good (though missing VF30, and thus incomplete) example of the difference between VF and XF to AU grades on this specific die variety.

The grades are listed at the end.

Comments, observations, questions? Many people seemed interested when I showed only two coins but did not post the grades. I thought this larger group would be informative and helpful.

As much as you would hope that there is an answer, there seems to be no fixed standard when it comes to grading these. From my observations any CBH can get a whole range of grades from a set of submissions. It all depends on the day and who is grading. CBH's are tough because of their strike characteristics, and everyone has an opinion on how to grade them.

Actually, what I am interested in is a discussion. And in this thread, I am merely showing how PCGS and NGC are grading a specific die variety, and they have been very consistent with it, in my experience.

What are your opinions?
