Wheel mark-details?

2 posts in this topic

Hello, I was wondering if anybody could tell me what details wheel mark means?

I sent in a 1964 Kennedy that I thought was a 67, and it came back details, obverse wheel mark. I still haven't gotten the coin back yet to view in-hand, but I am really surprised something like that would slip by me, I have graded hundreds of coins in the last year and never gotten an unexpected "details" grade until this submission.

Any insight is greatly appreciated, thanks everyone.

Thanks for the question. Wheel marks, which are caused when a coin gets stuck in the wheel of a counting machine, are fairly common issues but can be subtle at first glance. If you slowly rotate the coin under proper lighting conditions you will see a patch where the wheel scraped the surface of the coin.
