Interested in Buying 2014 Platinum graded MS69's or 70's

4 posts in this topic

Looking at MCM for the 69's and Silvertowne for the 70's.

The wire prices look decent = $1477 for the 69's &

$1590 for the 70's.

Which is better value?

Any other sellers recommended?

Thnx in advance.

If you want to pay more than a hundred extra dollars for a higher number on the slab, go ahead. There is literally no real difference between the quality of those two coins. Some people like the 70's because, for some reason, these are collected as "coins" and there are registry sets for them. It's bullion, and is best bought at the lowest price, in my opinion.

The better value is thus, quite obviously, the cheaper piece.

It also depends on why you're buying. While I agree with PhysicsFan on his recommendations, there are some other possible considerations. If all you really want is an ounce of American platinum bullion, then preferably don't get a slabbed coin such as a graded 69 or 70 but find one raw, ungraded.

If you want it for a serious collection, or wish to keep open the potential of eventually starting a serious collection of these, then try to obtain an attractive example, especially if you can manage to see before you buy, such as at a show or a shop. In that case, preferably scrutinize at least the face of Miss Liberty for marks or flaws. If buying unseen, a 70 will usually give you a better chance of getting a more attractive piece, but a 69 might be just as good.

There are several other things to consider. How much will it cost you to pay by wire? Some banks charge a hefty wire fee that negates the discount. Also, it might be prudent to wait a while before buying. Aside from the unpredictable future platinum price fluctuations, it's very possible the price of the 2014s will decline after the initial enthusiasm for them subsides. Never pay any premium for special wording on the label such as first strike, a marketing gimmick with some negative implications.
