a nice 1879 flowing hai stella 4.00 gold peice. posted by M. DECKER

the coin titler. these 4.00 gold (goloid) peices where minted out of public circulation .there were a few congressman and collectors who were interested.

 

the Smithsonian institute has several in there collection.they were not sent overseas.they are quite valuable if you can get one graded.made of various metal. gold ,copper aluminum white metal.and made underweighted meaning not 7 grams of gold.

$4 "Stella" patterns were struck in metric gold and in .900 fine gold as part of the 1879 and 1880 metric and Goloid sets peddled to Congress, and others. Specimens were also struck in bronze (usually called "copper"), aluminum and .900 fine silver. There are also two obverse designs: one has Liberty with flowing hair by Charles Barber adapted from a design by William Barber, and the other has Liberty with coiled hair also by Charles Barber (not Morgan).

 

Stellas are among the most common US pattern coins.
