2013 Winter coin over veiw posted by Six Mile Rick

A look at the changes I made.

Friends,

As the winter months come to an end and spring is around the corner I look at my collection to see the changes that were made the past few months. The sun will beam out next month and most of us will head outside to other hobbies that have waited for spring to finally show up. My winter this year was a great addition of proof set pieces 1999 to date and some really nice business strike additions as well. I did manage to add a few 1800's coins that will stay around quite a while for sure.

It looks like I have 3 friends in the CS that have decided to sell everything that they have collected in their coin sets. So much time spent learning and acquiring the best coins they could find. It almost seems like a waste of time in overall sense of looking at it. Then I guess we all have had hobbies at one time or another that just didn't pan out.

I have a few coins selling next month (Silver Eagles) and then a few more additions to add as replacements (1966 Cameo SMS set). For most part that would probably be the slow down point of the overall 2013 winter season collecting for me. Of course you will hear a few shouts from me this year as I find something interesting enough to show off or send in a GREAT submission or two.

To those of you that have decided to leave this great hobby I bid you fare well. To those that simply enjoy this great hobby ---- I'll catch ya later!!

Hi Rick,

Good point you bring up about seasonality in coin buying. I would guess that over time 70% of my purchases are between Oct & March before my focus really turns to trout and flyfishing. I will gear up for the March Baltimore show and then slow purchases. What I have noticed is that I will still continue to read and study coins now in the "off season" far more than in the past

Continued success & tight lines !

Rick,

You misunderstand my intention here. While I am selling most of my collections, I am not abandoning the hobby. I will still be around but only with limited sets at this time. For me, nothing I have accomplished was a waste of time or money. I have garnered much in my collecting days.

Just as you decided to sell your Roosevelts to buy a boat for the high seas, I too am selling my star set to pursue an automobile. Nothing different in the pursuit. You too spent much time and effort in the compilation of your set just as I did. Now it is time to move on to another pursuit.

I will still be building a set of Indian cents and maybe even the proofs down the line. My #1 1947 Mint Set is staying intact, and I am pursuing the best possible sets for my son's 1996 sets. Paul owns the king of the dimes there so I will never be #1 but I can come close if all works out. I am also keeping a few other sets. Who knows what they will turn into?

Short analysis, I'm not giving up everything, just enough to live two dreams in my shortened longevity of life. I hope you can understand this and not begrudge my dreams. I do have goals to obtain, only a lesser time to accomplish them.

Either way, my friend, I wish you the best in the overall ascension to the top, because it looks like you are headed there.

Michael,

It was not you that I was referring to :) You were the second though that thought this post was about you.

I'll never make it to the TOP ----- Part of this hobby that I enjoy is selling coins to help others build their sets.

BTW -- I still have the Silver Dimes so there is no boat YET!! (thumbs u

Good luck on your Lincoln sales and that SWEET CHEVY!! :headbang:

Hey Rick,

I know that you and I collect completely different things and I'm not one of your US modern comrades, but I'll still be around. Coins are year round for me as I don't have any specialized warm weather hobbies like Rich does. I'll be back in school come April, but I'll still be plugging away on the World side of things. I do plan to participate more in the communication parts of things as well, so I'll be better company hopefully :)

Hey again Rick,

I've got a few very nice acquisitions recently that I plan on sharing through some journals......including some excellent modern issues from Chile :)

Also......that is a very nice SBA. I have a definite soft spot for the Anthony dollar. Though I originally began collecting coins when I was 8, I fell away from it for a few years from ages 13 to 19. When I started back up at 19, it was because I found a 1999-D Anthony Dollar in change and SBAs are what I started with as an adult collector. I still have the set I built, and it is complete. Who knows? Maybe I'll start grading it and putting it up here and see how my first attempt ranks with the many fine sets on the Registry. But I have to catch up on my World grading first. BTW......what did that 1999-P grade at? Is it a 70?

Oops, I almost forgot!! Thanks for the well wishes regarding school! I'll take all of those I can get. This is the last term I have before I have to start working on my Master's Thesis. I'm excited to get finished and get started in my career, but I'm also pretty much scared to death!
