Lincoln Memorial cents - the real "First Strike"

7 posts in this topic

These quotes should be of interest to Lincoln Memorial cent collectors:

We respectfully request 30 blanks trial U. S. one cent piece, using newly designed reverse die and obverse die bearing XXXX instead of date. [12-5-1958]

Via telegram: WITNESSING STRIKING OF TRIAL PIECES OF U. S. ONE CENT COINS - USING THE NEWLY DESIGNED REVERSE DIE AND AN OBVERSE DIE BEARING XXXX INSTEAD OF A DATE - ALSO WITNESSING DESTRUCTION OF STAMPED PIECES THE SAME DAY. [12-5-1958]

In addition, they have been instructed to be certain that all of the reverse dies carrying the current design, be destroyed by the end of the present calendar year.[12-5-1958]

Mr. Howard referred to the care that must be exercised to avoid using the present design of reverse die in connection with 1959 coins. [12-5-1958]

I do not wish any publicity concerning, or photographs of, the first striking of this design, and first runs must not be segregated or distinguished in any way. [Dir. Brett 12-24-1958]

Friday January 2, 1959. The first working day of the new year. At 9:35AM the 1959 Lincoln cent with the new reverse design was struck. Each of us was handed a coin. We examined it, ‘drooled’ over its beauty, and smiled. Each one of us tossed our coin into the bin….and we returned to our desks. [1-2-1959]

"Would be cool to see a D Carr fantasy piece with XXXX instead of a date!"

We don't need counterfeits, fakes and fantasy junk, thank you!

Why do you use the term "we" ?

Why not say "I don't need counterfeits, fakes and fantasy junk, thank you!" ?

It seems like you are wishing to dictate what other people like and collect.

As such, it is contradictory to your recent post in another thread:

Presumably VCC and the OP have little understanding of hobbyists of any type. Collectors are not closed to new or different ideas, but they do not appreciate someone attempting to "stuff it down their throats."

A copy of this thread will make an interesting study case in the next psychology class I teach.
