Proof Coins and their little problems (hairlines and PVC) how much is allowed ?

2 posts in this topic

hi,

iam thinking about sending in some weimar proofs and iam wondering how much

hairlines and light pvc remaining (not some green slimy shxxt) is tolerated till it gets to an details grade !?

as we all know proof coin mirror surfaces are very reflective and show all sorts of anomalys very

quick.so at what point a silver proof coin is designated as details ?

you say:

Proof issues incorporate the same grades. Proof coins will be so noted with the use of the prefix PF for all grades 1 through 70.

if necessary i can upload a picture example !

thank you !!!

Hi,

Thanks for the question. Coins with active PVC (which can still damage the coin's surfaces) will not be encapsulated by NGC. The PVC must first be safely removed, which can be done by Numismatic Conservation Services (NCS), an affiliate of NGC. If the PVC is removed but it has already damaged the coin's surfaces then this could result in an NGC Details grade.

It is not possible to determine from a picture whether the hairlines on your coin would result in an NGC Details grade. Because of the many nuances of professional grading, it would only be possible to make that determination by inspecting the coin in person with the proper lighting.
