Are Sellers Being Realistic In Pricing ?

132 posts in this topic

GF---what price did you pick yours up at?? Just curious.

$1825...I locked in and committed about 7-10 days ago because the price was going to go up based on gold and the Grey Sheet. Not sure if he was raising the price $50 or $150 -- I cashed in some change, got the $$$ and think I got a good deal.

I had until Thursday to get the $$$ or a nice - sized deposit to 'hold' the coin. Got there 20 minutes before closing !

Just trying to better understand pricing dynamics....some (I'd say 1 in 5) sellers are competitive with what I see from auction houses and/or local dealers. The rest are too high, for the reasons I outlined.

Are Ebay/Paypal fees about 10% of the final purchase price, regardless of selling price ? That could account for a big portion of the gap for some of the coins that are in the ballpark but still too high. The ones that are $1,000 - $1,500 higher than market are just hoping for a prayer or will wait months or years for the market to come to them.

eBay fees contribute to the BIN pricing, but you also need to consider the seller's buying position. I'm guessing that many of the "high priced" saints listed at BIN were bought by the seller well over market pricing and now they're buried in them. That's why it's important to be patient when buying and also knowing what you want to do with the coin.

Common Sense Coming To Ebay ?

There's been a bunch of MS-65 and below graded coins getting good activity recently on Ebay, by that I mean multiple bids and pricing (at least before the finish) reflecting market value (I rarely -- as in can't recall ever -- see multiple bidding ABOVE market value; maybe someone uses BIN to get a particularly desirable coin at above-market pricing, dunno).

Ther's a 1925 MS-65 @ $1,525 with 7 bids,....a 1927 MS-65 @ $1,879 with 3 bids....a 1925 MS-65 @ $2,000 with 16 bids....a 1908 No Motto MS-65+ CAC @ $2.205 with 8 bids. Go much above $2,200 for commons and I see no activity or just BIN's sitting there.

Buyers tend to be flush with more cash around the holidays so as we move away from that sellers could be more rational on pricing.

Competitive Ebay Bidding:

An MS-65 1924 common has 10 different bids and a price with 8 hours left of just over $2,000. What will be interesting to see is if some of the losing bidders check out some other MS-65's that are priced about $100 or less above what will likely be the winning bid.

What's interesting is there's a PCGS MS-65 asking only $30 more than that with BIN so it'll be interesting if it gets some interest. I'll try and follow them.

As a seller I know that I aim for 5-10% net profit, many things I just break even on or lose something reasonable if it is tired and I need to move it out.

But I have never bought anything on ebay in coins or currency.

Not a single coin. I have bid on things, but generally they go too high.
