Coin toss for the 1963 game.

Hi everyone. Today the military academies of the Army and Navy are playing there annual game. The coin that was used today for the coin toss was a 1923 Peace Dollar that was to be used by President Kennedy for the 1963 game. The game was postponed and played a few weeks later as the country was still reeling form the assassination. A few weeks later Midshipman Tom Lynch received a letter from Cyrus Vance who was Secretary of the Army at the time along with the coin as a memento for the game of which Navy won that year 21-15 lead by Navy quarterback Roger Staubach. Tom Lynch went onto a very successful career in the Navy and served as the superintendent of the Naval Academy from 1991-94. Lynch was moved by the history of the coin and occasion that he donated this coin to the Naval Academy. It is this coin that was used today for the coin toss. This is not the actual picture of the coin used today but just one to show the beauty of this coin

Hunter's Gold,

Great story!

My dad was voted All Army back in 1959 in football. His alma mater the U of Hawaii played both Army and Navy this season. They lost to Navy 28-42 in Annapolis and beat Army 49-42 in Hawaii for their only win this season, pretty sad!

Go Bow’s,
