Magnetic Quarter

2 posts in this topic

I found a 1999-P New Jersey Quarter struck on an incorrect planchet (no Copper core). A rare earth magnet can lift the quarter off of a table but is not strong enough to stick solidly to it. Wondering if this coin can be authenticated as a genuine error? and what it might be worth?

Thanks for the question. Pure nickel is magnetic but copper-nickel without a copper core won't stick to a magnet. Most likely the coin is plated with something with stronger magnetic properties. If NGC evaluates it and determines that it is a genuine error, then it is something we would certify. We don't assign appraise coins so I couldn't speak to its value.
