February 25, 1862: Congress authorizes the engraving of signatures and the use of seals on notes as well as a new class of currency known as "United States Notes." These new notes, also called "Legal Tender Notes," will be issued in April.

Salmon P. Chase was the Secretary of Treasury from 1861 - 1864. I'm going to take a leap and say it was Salmon P. Chase, series 1862.

Q: What series of United States notes were the first to feature the engraved signature of the Secretary of the Treasury. Who was it?

A: 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Notes, William McAdoo.

Prior to this issue the signatures were of the Register of the Treasury and Treasurer of the United States. From the 1914 Red Seal FRNs forward they were signed by the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury.

Thanks to everyone who participated this week!
