R-4 rarity

8 posts in this topic

Hello everyone. I have a question concerning how much an R-4 rarity increases the value of a coin. I bought an 1803 draped bust large cent that had AG3 details. It matches diagnostics of S-244. Is the coin worth any more than a common AG3 coin and if so approximately how much? Thanks in advance. In that grade the R-4 (76 to 200 estimated known) rarity rating does not mean much. For the most part the authors who have set those ratings over the years ignore the existence of very low grade coins in their calculations unless there are something like 20 known examples total. Even then a serious collectors would view it as "a filler" until they could find something better.

Unless it is a popular variety most early dates do not command much of a premium until you reach the R-5 level. The R-4 level is starting to move a little but most of them still only bring 10% or less premium over type money.

Generally, an R.4 die marriage will increase the value on post-1806, Capped Bust coinage. However, not so much on pre-1807 coinage, which already has added rarity factored in to the price, and definitely not in that grade.
