Researching Medals

Looking at some descriptions of medals, I see the term DeWitt-Sullivan a lot. What is that in reference too? Is that a catalogue, or are they the maker/designer? What are good ways to research medals?

Thanks for the question. The DeWitt-Sullivan number refers to a 1981 reference titled "American Political Badges and Medalets 1789-1892," which was Edmond B. Sullivan's update to J. Doyle DeWitt's 1959 book "A Century of Campaign Buttons 1789-1889."

To add to what Max said, you can spend a small fortune on reference books for medals & tokens and still barely scrape the surface. There have been so many produced by private mints where record-keeping isn't always the best.
