Fake Morgan GSA found at FUN Show

6 posts in this topic

You aren't breaking any rules - you are posting really good information. This is the first I've heard of fake GSA's. It sounds like if you know what you are looking for, these fakes aren't that great - but most people don't know and wouldn't think to check.

Great info, and thanks for posting.

Thanks for sharing, this is great information to have. I just checked all of mine and they're legit. :)

I'm sure I would have noticed if the coins were circulated but I'm not so sure that I would have caught the holder or plastic case. The grainy holder is pretty obvious, and as much as I photograph my coins these days, a smooth cardboard insert probably would have caught my eye.

I will be giving these a closer look in the future!

First, I am not in any way a specialist in Morgan dollars but thought this thread looked interesting. Secondly, I do have 3 CC Morgans in my collection (pcgs 82-83-84 GSAs -ms64 - none like the coin in question). The article states the coin in figure 2 is the genuine mintmark and the coin in figure 3 is the counterfeit. Based on the pictures, I have to say figure 3 looks a lot more like the mint marks on my coins than does figure 2. Just curious if you think the article has the figures reversed and, if not, what is wrong with figure 3? Thanks.

Good question, Jim. We are here to help others learn. When I looked at Figure 2, I may have seen what you saw - what appeared to be an "incused" mint mark. The more I stared directly at it and then focused a bit to the side, it was obvious the mint mark is actually in "relief". I would also suggest the problem with Figure 3 is in the field area and it does look a bit like a counterfeit might look - I guess. Anyway, get your eyes checked and get with the program.
