1963 Franklin half, CAMEO OR NOT?

7 posts in this topic

Currently graded NGC PF68, no cameo designation. Is there a good enough chance for it to get cameo on re-submission? Big difference in price!

No, the reverse cameo isn't strong enough for the designation, especially on the hanger and the bottom of the bell. It would probably get a star for a strong obverse cameo, but the cost of resubmission is not worth it (and to be honest, it is a rather small jump between 68 and 68CAM, its not really worth it even if you would get the CAM).

I see..

about the price, PF68 cameo just sold on eBay for $275, so It would be a big enough jump for me (from $50) if it was to get the cameo designation. If it only gets a star that's not enough to spend submission fee..

Thanks!

That is an extremely high price for that. Ebay is not a good place to get pricing data from, for a number of reasons. Heritage auction archives are considerably more reliable, and they indicate that 63's in 68CAM average about $125 - $150. A couple of outliers have very strong one-sided cameo, and went for higher prices. I repeat - even if you get the CAM designation, it is not worth it on this coin.

The obverse is a cameo, but the reverse falls just short. I have a similar piece which did get the cameo, but people advised me that didn't really deserve it. It's in my collection, and I'm not pushing the issue to get a better one.

he only reason to that would be if I wanted to go higher in the registry, but is now impossible because one guy who as over a million and half registry points has got it all locked up. Nobody can catch him. I'm done with the registry chase on the half cent through non gold dollar type set.
