1936 British West Africa Penny - 2 questions

5 posts in this topic

I picked up this beautiful 1936 British West Africa Penny for just a few bucks. I don't really collect British or African coinage, I only bought it because I really like the design and the price was next to nothing.

What does the KN stand for? The Krause book only lists it as 1936KN with no definition of the KN.

Is there any significance of the hexagram? At first I thought it was a star of David but I don't think that area of Africa had to much Jewish influence in the 1930's.

Have a great day

Jim

The KN is the mint where it was struck, Kings Norton Mint. The KN mintmark is just below the hole on the denomination side. As for the star I can't help. I don't know the symbology in this case, if any. (sometimes a design is just a design and it doesn't mean anything.)

The six points on the hexagram reffer to the 6 British colonies comprising British West Africa at the time: Nigeria, Ghana, British Cameroon, Gambia, Sierra Leone, British Togoland.

Wow very cool information! I bought this coin because it reminded me of my father. He had a raw one similar to the one pictured above, and at some point he was researching why the hexagram. I found some papers on the coin after he passed away. I wish he was still around to give him the information you provided. Thank you!!! It is appreciated!

Have a great day
