"W" designation

There are no additional points for Registry coins with a W designation. If you have a coin with a W designation, you may indicate that fact in the description field for the coin when submitting it for a set. If you already have a registered coin and want to change the description you provided, just choose the coin from the Manage Coins option under the coin menu.

While we are on the topic, NGC recently discontinued the use of the W designation. The reason for ending its use is simply that the marketplace doesn't see a great need for this designation. It was introduced by NGC about 2-1/2 years ago at the suggestion of some dealers and collectors who wished to distinguish between toned and untoned coins. A recent re-evaluation of this designation by NGC suggests that it has had minimal impact on the coin market.

Coins certified with a "W" (meaning untoned) are scored the same as those not having it. As for entering into the registry, you would simply submit the coin by its certified ID number as with any other coin.

By the way, NGC recently discontinued use of the W designation, as the marketplace had shown little interest in it.

Althought the " T " (TONED) was a bit questionable, I personally liked the " W " and am sorry NGC caved in on this one.

When it comes to clad coins, the 'W' gave an indication the coin was bright vs "gold" (read: not attractive) toning. I place a premium on bright, clean, no spots, haze, WHITE coins in this catagory.
