Q: When WWI broke out (1914) what was the largest financial institution in Canada; and which two men were featured on that bank's 1914 banknote series?

The largest financial institution was The Bank of Montreal. On their 1914 Series Note the two men featured were : Sir Frederick Williams-Taylor and Sir (Henry) Vincent Meredith.

"In 1914, the Bank of Montreal had C$260 million in assets, 179 offices, and 1,650 employees" making it the largest bank in Canada at the outbreak of WWI.

 

The two vignette portraits showed Sir Frederick Williams-Taylor (General Manger) and Vincent Meredith (President)
