2011 Smithsonian Institute Confederate States of America Cents

2 posts in this topic

In 2011, a series of Confederate Cents based on the design attributed to Lovett was privately issued and associated with the Smithsonian Institute, with the SI initials on the reverse under the T in CENT. This series was encapsulated by NGC as:

Smithsonian "Restrike"
What does the "Restrike" in quotes mean here? The Smithsonian should be on possession of the original cancelled dies as well as Robert Bashlow's mechanically transferred dies. When NGC lists "Restrike" on the insert in this instance, what does restrike mean, e.g. struck with original dies, struck with mechanically transferred dies, struck with new dies without physical transfer, or something else?

Just curious. Thanks!

Thanks for the question. These are private issues based on the original Confederate Cent design. They were struck under an agreement with the Smithsonian.
