new to this found a 1971 nickel no s mark

Ah....what you have there is a Jefferson nickel struck at the Philadelphia Mint, strictly for circulation, so there is no mint mark. In 1971, the "S" stands for San Fransisco Mint and were only struck for proof sets, which are collector only coins.

 

From Coin Facts: Struck only as Proofs and available originally only in Proof sets. Some Proof Nickels of this year (1971) were made without a mintmark. They are very rare errors.
