Fugio Raised Rim question for specialists

9 posts in this topic

Noticed that this coin I purchased back in 2005 is mentioned by Heritage as a "raised rim" yet this is not noted on the NGC holder -- although PCGS examples note it. The Heritage listing puts the PCGS price guide price in MS-63 at $25,000 (is this reality?).

So, is the "raised rim" a rare variety? Will NGC note it if requested?

Did I hit a jackpot?

Thank You.

There are 3 varieties that employ the "raised rim on center label" reverse die, known as Newman-Z. All are very rare, and off the charts on MS64. However, when comparing your coin to Newman Z, it does not appear to be a match.

Too bad Heritage doesn't have a buy-back guarantee if they are wrong in their attribution!

Oh well.

I agree it isn't a raised rim variety. With the caveat that I am not overly experienced attributing fugios, I'm coming up with 11-X which is an R-4 variety. The Z rev with the raised rims only comes with Obv 1, 12, and 19 and the obv on the OP coin definitely does not have one of those three obverses.

Thanks for the help everyone. As you can tell from the photo, the obverse has a dramatic clashed die that is pretty neat.

whats at 12 o clock where the rings are? looks like someone spilt paint on it.

These streaks are planchet defects created by impurities in the copper. Most Fugio cents and other colonial coppers have them.
