1902 Morgan & 1923 Peace dollars

11 posts in this topic

Picked up a couple of coins today for a decent price. Thinking I may want to do a crossover with a regrade on the 1902 Morgan. What do you guys think? How about some tips on taking pictures as well. I aplogize if my pictures are a little too large. Will post grades a little later on. Thanks!

Leave the 1902 in the current holder - most likely you will wind up with the same MS 64 grade.

Agree, IMHO the 1902 was very fortunate to make it into a MS64 slab. The strike is weak for the date and the absence of hits in the fields and any focal areas was the only factor that allowed PCGS to grade MS64.

Both coins are maxed out in the holders that they are in. The 1902 has smooth surfaces, but the strike is mediocre; the luster is too muted to grade any higher; and it has a bit of haze from re-toning from a dip that is not attractive. The 1924 will get a down grade if you try to cross it.

I agree Coinman. I was thinking it was a little bit overgraded because of the marks to the left and right of Lady Liberty's head. And I bought it for a good price, so I didnt pay full MS65 price for a coin that, in my opinion, should be a MS63.
