Description

$320 (also on ebay if you prefer)

In 1816, the mint in Rio de Janeiro produced a small number of 960 Reis with a modified obverse legend reading "JOANNES.D.G.PORT.BRAS.ET.ALG.P.REGENS" to reflect the higher standing given to Brazil in the Portuguese kingdom after the defeat of Napoleon in 1815. The legend was reverted to the previous phrasing despite Brazil's elevation until the design was changed to the United Kingdom version in 1818.

This example is lightly toned with some luster remaining. Graded PCGS XF Details for Surface Hairlines on the reverse. Overstruck on a 1811-Mo (HJ) Ferdinand armored bust 8 reales. A scarce type. KM-313

PCGS Certification #26260546

Host attribution notes

Obverse: The host coin is rotated such that its top points toward the ".ET." on the 960 reis. The busts's armored shoulder is easily visible near the 16 and top-right flower. The date can be seen from 12:30 to 1:30.

Reverse: The assayer's initials "HJ" are visible on the right-side trapezoid. The 'M' of the mintmark sits across the SU of SUBQ with the 'o' of the mintmark being visible directly between the tops of the S and U.

1814-B 960 Reis Brazil. NGC AU-53. Toned, Struck over Mexico City (FT) 8 reales.

SOLD

This 1814-B 960 Reis has very nice ring toning with golds and blues on the edge, a beautiful coin. Graded AU-53 by NGC. Overstruck on a Carolus IIII Mexico City (FT) 8 reales with a worn die, obliterating some of the details, without it being actual wear. Worn dies are often seen on Bahia-minted 960 reis.

NGC Certification #2778019-002

Host attribution notes

Obverse: The CAROLUS legend can be read starting just before 12:00.

Reverse: The top of the crown is seen directly above the A in NATA. The assayer's initials (FT) are visible beneath the N of SIGN and the right side of the bottom triangle. The circle of the Mo mintmark can be seen just to the right of the bottom tip of the right-hand triangle, near the rim. Remnants of the M of the Mo mintmark can be seen on the same triangle.

$SOLD

1818-R 960 reis, Double branch variety (each branch on the obverse is doubled instead of single) overstruck on an 1815 Potosi-FL Argentine 8 Soles Sunface. VF. While toned and worn through circulation, this is an uncommon variety on a scarce and arguably the most popular host coin with good remaining details of the overstrike, leaving the attribution very clear. A pleasant combination, and a good price for a sunface overstrike.

Host attribution notes

Obverse: The sun face and rays are apparent in the center of the obverse. The legend PROVINCIAS is clearly visible starting at 5:00.

Reverse: The "FL" assayer mark is visible from 5:30-6:10 and the following dot on the left leg of the N in NATA. The date will be sitting under NATA. The Potosi mintmark is under the G in SIGN. Some of the center details are visible.
