Summary:

 

The bacterium Cupriavidus metallidurans can survive in solutions of gold chloride, usually a toxic compound, and can catalyze a reaction to precipitate the gold metal into nuggets of absolute purity.

 

This process ultimately might be manipulated for the profitable extraction gold from sea water, but that is not currently feasible.

On a scientific note, I really dislike articles like this one. They are using the term "alchemy" in a way that I have never heard a scientist use the term and in a way that I believe is incorrect. Also, they state that gold chloride is of no value, when in reality it is mostly gold itself.
