Sometimes, "making money" had a different meaning at the Mint

According to a letter dated August 10, 1893 to Herman D. Money, assistant superintendent at New Orleans Mint from Robert Preston, acting mint director.

When your time is not fully occupied at the mint, it is my desire that you shall, in a quiet and unobtrusive manner, endeavor to obtain evidence of the speculation in cotton, etc. by the Cashier, J. M. Dowling. Of course, you will have to be very careful in this matter.

What I find interesting is that it sounded more like an order rather than a personal request. It's always amazing what some people are "required" to do just to keep their jobs.
