Is this reverse of 1878 or 1879?

8 posts in this topic

I am no expert when it comes to coins and I have started acquiring some Morgans to add to my collection. I picked up this 1878-P Morgan and it had no designation as to whether it was the reverse of 78 or 79. I think by looking at it and pics on the Internet it is reverse of 78 but I am hoping some of you more expert Morgan collectors can let me know for sure. One shot of the whole back of the coin and two closer shots of the eagle. Thanks for your help!!

Besides being a 78 Reverse, it is also a 7 tailfeather variety. There are 8TF, 7TF, 7 over 8 TF and some variations of these. If you go to VAMWorld, you can see the listings for all of them.

I forgot to mention, in case you didn't already know, that the 78 Reverse has the parallel arrow feather (PAF) on the top in line with the shaft. The 79 Reverse has the slanted arrow feather (SAF) on the top.

Holy mackeral!!! I guess I'll need to do more research.
lol.

Yes, you can pick up a lot at VAMworld.

I don't collect the series but with a little effort I learned this is a '78 strong. VAM 37 7/8 Tailfeather 7/4 variety. Obverse 112, reverse B/Ag. R4.

Doesn't mean much to me but variety collectors like this information.

Lance.
