Searching silver

thought I would have some fun and look through some rolls of dimes and halves. Anything I should look for besides the 90% silver or 40% halves? Key dates?

I'm not sure there is anything other than errors to look for in circulated modern coins.

I'm not into moderns, but perhaps the Cherrypicker's Guide has some moderns to look for.

edited to add: Forgot to mention - you may very well find some stray proof coins that someone spent, though.

For the heck of it, I just went through $290 of halves I rec'd from the bank. No silver. Just a waste of time. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Got BLANKED, a bunch of bicentenials and a bunch of 71's

If you had been searching for 90% & 40% silver coins about 8 years ago when the price of silver was below $6, I would imagine that you would find quite a few. In two years, I accumlated about 10 rolls of 90% silver halves and 18 rolls of 40% silver halves, but when the price skyrocketed to above $40, everybody and their brother started searching rolls. The well has pretty much gone dry except for the occasional senior citizen who might cash in rolls until the retirement check comes in.

Finding anything of value from circulation that is listed in the CPG wouldn't be worthwhile unless it happened to be something super rare. In circulated condition, most just aren't worth that much unless you get lucky and find a bidiot on FleaBay.

I think you have to get the rolls that are rolled at home from people who just throw change in a jar. Or from the machines that exchange coins for currency. Bank rolled seems to have been picked through

I rarely find anything worth while in half dollars or quarters from any banks. I have tried at fifth third, Central FL Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and a few other local branches. The problem IMO is where the rolls are filled. From my experience, you will have much better luck finding silver and error coins in rolls that are straight from Dunbar or a major coin sorting and distributing company. From my understanding Dunbar gets coins from banks, casinos and cities to be sorted and rolled. There was a show on the History Channel last year about coins and one segment was about the Dunbar facillity and how they are the 2nd largest distributor of coins and paper money nationwide. (the 1st is the US mint/Fed reserve ofcourse.)

NewPrepper- The cherrypickers guide is excellent and I recommend "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change" by Ken Potter and Dr. Brian Allen. Its a great read and it has neat facts and info on many error coins, even "BIE" errors.

Good luck!

One thing I know was found in change in the past year was a 1965 90% silver dime. So, add odd 1965 silver to the list. Not many out there, but they ARE there!

Since that is an error of sorts, what is the value of a coin like that?

From what I have read, a 1965 dime on a silver planchet is around $3,800 in AU and $2,000 in XF.

Not much except like DaveG said, you'll see a lot of proofs if you look in halves much.

Keep us posted on the results please!

Told my wife to ask for rolls brought in by bank customers, the bank had 2, got a 69. Not bad a $4 coin for 50 cents
