Capped Bust Half Overton? Something new?

7 posts in this topic

Hello Everyone

I have an 1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar that I cannot seem to establish a variety on. It has a peculiarity in the date in that the 2 has been recut. Nowhere in Overton's book (Fourth Edition/Parsley) does it mention this recutting for 1827. It is a square base two. Please see the pictures. I know I haven't provided much else info. But has anyone else ever seen this recutting of the two on an 1827? Thanks a million!

Mike

I couldn't speak to this die-marriage specifically, but... not by any means is each and every incident of recut devices mentioned in the Overton reference. Recutting is only mentioned when it is a useful PUP (pickup point) for attribution.

Thanks for the reply. The pictures are at a high power focus but the upturned sarif is identifiable to the naked eye so I am surprised no mention is made anywhere. I have attributed all of my other half dollars but I cannot seem to identify this one.

The defects in the 2 are visible on many 1827 varieties, and the lumps were probaby on the number punch, itself.

This is O-126 (an R-2), which has a die break in the lowest curl and shows the defects in the 2 very clearly on the Overton plate coin.

Thank you for the reply and variety determination. I was shocked that I missed this. It is obvious after reading your opinion. I inherited a couple of these half dollars and love them so much that I will usually leave most any decent coin shop with a new purchase. This one was inherited and is need of conservation due to residue.

Thanks Again

Mike
