Does it appear to be raised or recessed? If it is raised, then it may be that the die was damaged. If it is recessed, then it could have been that something stuck to the surface of the die.

Then, it won't add any value to the coins, and they would probably only be conversation pieces as long as they are kept together.

I agree, but will add that I think the marks reduce the coin's grade and thus potentially the ultimate value of each piece.
