Cabot Medal info ? ? ?

I picked up this Cabot medal at an on-line auction for $10 bucks. From the description given I thought it was the size of a US 25¢ piece. The only reason I bought it was that I liked the picture on the medal. But when I received the medal in the mail I was shocked to find out that it is bigger than a US Morgan dollar and twice as thick. I am assuming it is copper, and the reverse shows it is some type of commemorative from 1997. And some type of limited edition. I tried every variation of Google search and could find absolutely nothing about this piece. Does anyone have any info on this thing? Where is it from and who made it?
