1992 Penny " Close AM "

18 posts in this topic

The close AM has nothing to do with doubling on the letters, but refers to the placement and spacing of the letters "A" and "M" in America on the reverse. The coin is believed to have been struck as an experimental piece or a trial strike to determine how the new reverse would look that was implemented in 1993 (note this was coin was not struck from proof dies like some of the later date wide AM varieties).

Any idea why they think it is an experimental piece? I can understand that it isn't from a proof die because the proofs at the time were also wide AM, but why can't it be from a misdirected 1993 die that was in production near the end of 1992? Toward the end of the year they start making a stockpile of dies for the coming year, and often striking a stockpile of coins as well. If both die types were in use the possibility that an almost indistinguishable 1993 rev could have been used in 1992 by mistake very easily.

Railroad,

To post a picture you need to first load it into some third party site such as Flikr.com or Photobucket.com. Then all you do is grab address of the photo from that site and paste it into the third icon from the left (enter an image) seen in the "Full Reply Screen" option here. Not hard to do once you find the correct puttons to push.

To be honest, I am not sure how error specialists arrived at this conclusion over your highly possible alternative. In fact, I'm guessing that it is all based on speculation. Regardless, the coins appear to garner a very nice premium.

It appears that you linked the entire album rather than the individual coin. I did, however, type the URL in and I found the image. The penny is much too small for me to be able to do anything. Can you zoom in and crop out the extra white space?
