2nd U S Mint cornerstone

8 posts in this topic

On April 3, 1903 the Treasury Department received from the Mint Realty Company, purchasers of the old (2nd) U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, all of the historical content of the building’s cornerstone. This consisted of a copper half cent, 1828, a copper cent, 1829 and a silver dime of 1829. There were also copies of local newspapers and a statement by the building’s architect.

Anyone know what happened to the materials?

No idea on the disposition but a contemporary newspaper account stated that the

cornerstone also had a copy of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence,

and Washington’s Farewell Address. It also stated that U.S. coins were included

in the package but named only two: a half dime struck on July 4, 1829 and a 1792

half disme.

Roger,

Contact Len Augsburger or Joel Orosz. They would be the persons most likely to know whether these items are still extant.
